2002 CHARDONNAY (ESTATE)

There are very few wines I can remember tasting for the first time but this is one of them. I'd heard about it from someone, and then I spotted it on a wine list early on a sultry summer's evening in St Kilda. It was a very Secret Life moment - sitting outside some trendy restaurant ordering Asian fusion food and sipping Toolangi chardonnay - and I wish Claudia Karvan had been there. Apart from the fact that she's hot, she would have loved the wine.

This is really complex: stonefruit, pear, tangerine too, with savoury nutty barrel-ferment characters. Attacks with exotic, dried mango and peach, is really tight and concentrated in the middle with a zesty, almost salty, tang. Flinty and nutty to close with excellent length. 94/100, $30.
