2010 RESERVE CHARDONNAY
JAMES HALLIDAY, WEEKEND AUSTRALIAN MAGAZINE, 1-2 September 2012
This wine was made by Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda fame, who is able to craft chardonnay with exceptional texture and flavour complexity. He is happy to walk a later-picking highwire, bringing together grapefruit zest and juice, white peach and cashew, bound by strong minerally acidity. It shares the length with other Yarra Valley chardonnnays, but was far less easy to recognise. 97 points. Drink to 2020.
PATRICK ECKEL, winereviewer.com.au, January 2017
Produced by Rick Kinzbrunner who crafts arguably Australia's greatest Chardonnay's at Giaconda in Gippsland. The wine was fermented in French oak, no doubt a high proportion was new prior to ageing for 18 months. The wine gives a nod to the maker style as much as the vineyard and together delivers an impeccable Chardonnay. A lightly golden yellow in the glass, nectarine and wood smoke define the nose with a touch of lees funk for good measure. The palate is plush and approachable having benefited from a number of years in bottle, there is a lemon curd and citrus character that cuts through the wine with flinty peach filling out the palate and oak induced drying tannins to finish. Under screw cap this wine will live for a number of years.
AUSSIE WINE TASTING @aussie.wine.tasting, January 2017
Made at Giaconda by Rick Kinzbrunner. All handpicked fruit from the Dixons Creek vineyard goes in to French Oak for 18 months. Smells bloody great and tastes pretty dammed good too. Up there with the best Aussie chardonnay's going around. Drink the good stuff.
HUON HOOKE, huonhooke.com, September 2015
Medium to full, bright yellow colour, with a strongly oaked, toasty barrel/sulfidic bouquet showing smoked meats and a whiff of the 'chicken run'. The palate is full-bodied, intense and focused, with firm acidity and a little hardness. The finish is long and penetrating. It demands food. A big chardonnay, loaded with flavour and character, and the potential to age happily for many more years.
CHRIS BOLDEN, THE WINE GENIUS, May 2015
Exceedingly complex, with bright Chardonnay fruit, complex oak derived intrigue and zippy acidity; this is the complete package. Alluring peach, red apple and melon build the fruit spectrum, with waxy (and slightly funky) oak, wet rock and grapefruit rounding out the bouquet. A concentrated and highly involved mouth -feel mirrors the bouquet, and sour acidity pulses throughout the finish. The Hounsell’s (with Rick Kinzbrunner) have crafted a stunning success. 97 points.
GRAHAM HASTINGS, GENXYWINES.COM, August 2013
Made by Rick Kinzbrunner (Giaconda), in a softer, later picked style than the 2011s, rich and ripe white nectarine, lemon sherbert and honeydew melon with grilled nut and savoury meal notes, toasty oak and crisp lemony acidity (****)
