2012 BLOCK F RESERVE CHARDONNAY
HALLIDAY WINE COMPANION, 2017 Edition
Gleaming straw-green; virtually stands alone with the power and depth of its complexity, layer upon layer, as much a red as a white wine in terms of its structure and texture. Made by Rick Kinzbrunner. Rating 97.
HUON HOOKE, HUONHOOKE.COM, February 2017
Medium-yellow colour with a slightly funky, low-level sulfide bouquet, which just shades the primary fruit slightly. There's a touch of wheat meal. The palate is full-bodied, powerful, rounded and pillowy, with an intriguing touch of bitterness and 'chew' (both from phenolics) which linger in the aftertaste. A trace of liquorice in the follow-through. An unusual, concentrated, power-packed style.

This Chardonnay is a bigger wine, made in the style of a Burgundy Grand Cru. The yield for the grapes is 1t/acre (2t/acre for the Estate wine). After undergoing malolactic fermentation, the wine is matured for two years in barrique, 50% new. This is quite a powerful and rich style, but it is not buttery. Hazelnut and almond flavours add to the complexity of the fruit. The oak adds some spice. Not many Chardonnays are made this way in Australia, but it all hangs together. This wine makes a statement.
Hand harvested, low cropped fruit from the premium Chardonnay block on our Dixons Creek vineyard. Cropping levels adjusted through pruning technique and green harvesting to 1.0 to 1.5 tonnes per acre.
Whole bunch basket pressing. Full malolactic fermentation with substantially all wild yeasts. Aged in 50% new and 50% one year old French oak barriques for 18 months. Bottled without filtering.
