Mendoza, I10V3 and P58 clones, hand-picked, crushed, wild-fermented in French oak (30% new), matured for 10 months, made by Franco D'Anna at Hoddles Creek Estate. As befits a wine at this level, this is an exercise in taking high quality grapes, making them without expense, but with incredible attention to detail, and ending up with exquisite harmony and balance, the length a celebration of the essence of Yarra Valley chardonnay. Rating 96. Drink to 2025.

REGAN DREW,, December 2016

Wunderkind Franco D’Anna of Hoddles Creek at the winemaking reins. 10 months in French oak. Unmistakably Chardonnay. Ripe yellow stone fruit flesh and skins, just melted butter on toast, macadamia nuts and some orange citrus. Broad palate, but certainly not corpulent. Spicy oak with vanilla hints, Meyer lemon, light grapefruit citrus and (if you didn’t know the label) unexpected acidity which closes the curtains on the first act of the fruit show. Firmly camped in the big style, but that mature winemaking ensures it stays the course. Very good.

Chardonnay from Dixons Creek in the Yarra Valley. Made by Franco D’Anna. Tight but powerful. Demands a bit of the drinker. Oatmeal and stonefruits, spicy oak and fennel. Unfurls slowly in the glass. Feels fractionally warm, but only fractionally. Makes an impression and then some. Power, coiled in on itself, is the dominant impression.

QWINE BLOGSPOT, October 2016

Toolangi making $38 sound cheap. Absolute quality here shining on the podium. Precise and elegant, the delivery is seamless from top to toe. Previously made by Dave Bicknell out of Oakridge, there has been a change in the guard with Franco D'Anna taking charge now from his Hoodles Creek winery (Gary Walsh from Winefront reliably informs me that Franco also made the 2011). This sat in 25% French oak for ten months. Only 280 dozen produced. Peaches and cream and a whisper of fig effortlessly drive this creating serious drool factor. It's certainly a generous wine but one the affectionados can easy handle and indulge in. Superb length and attention to detail has ensured this wine smacks the bullseye. Would I buy it? Absolutely!
