“Raspberry compote and red rose sit above cassia, clove, and cherry jam, with a substratum of iodine minerality. Some time in the glass unveils more earthy notes in the form of porcini mushroom, forest floor, whole-bunch spice, and a whisper of au jus, with the minerality building further. The palate has lovely drive and intensity – dark cherry and rose again, brown spice, forest floor, and iodine minerality – within a supple texture with a cool feel. The tannins are chalky and long, drawing the wine to an elongated finish of poise and savoury charm. This is a classy wine of savoury complexity and brilliant poise that blossoms in the glass.”
- Tom Kline, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy
Tasting Notes:
On the palate there is sous bois, truffle, dried cranberry, blue fruits and a little molten rock flavour. The tannin is graphite like and should continue to evolve but now it feels wholesome. This old vine concentration and flavour oozes complexity and should develop nicely over time.
Winemaking Notes:
From a year of tiny yields and tiny 30-40g bunches comes an expression of Premier Pinot Noir that is loaded with character. All the spices; rosemary, lavender, cinnamon and clove. The fruit takes a backseat to the spice and savoury though with air forest berries and red cherry emerges.
Viticultural Notes:
The fruit for this Pinot Noir comes from Block 4 on our Hill Road Vineyard in Coldstream. Pinot Noir clone: MV6 planted in 1987.
Partially destemmed as whole berries with 80% of fruit fermented as whole clusters. On skins for 3 weeks then pressed to French oak barriques (25% new) for malolactic conversion, aged in oak for 10 months on lees prior to bottling. 100 dozen produced.
