Toolangi Shiraz 2021

RRP: $27.00
92 Points - The Wine Front
"This is often something of a steal and it is again here. Peppery spice notes, sweet-sour red cherry characters, slips of darker berries and smoky oak. It’s a frisky red but it has just enough depth to give it a satisfying feel, and the spice notes have a bit of come-hither about them. Personally I’d buy/drink this in a heartbeat."
- Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
Established in 1995, Toolangi Vineyards is in the Yarra Valley adjoining the Toolangi State Forest. This is a single site vineyard on fine clay loams which produces grapes wines with distinctive personalities, each wine showing a strong sense of place.
Tasting Notes: A spicy nose of cumin, brambles, and wild berry fruits. There are also some iron mineral notes and a whiff of black pepper. On the palate it’s a lively Shiraz showing spicy plum, forest berries on a bed of confident tannin finishing fresh and accessible.
Winemaking Notes: Hand-picked on the 26th March
Vinification & Elevage: Fruit was destemmed as whole berries, with 10% as whole bunches. A short cold soak prior to fermentation and on skins for 14 days. The wine was pressed to seasoned French oak foudres for malolactic conversion on lees and in oak for 10 months.
Viticultural Notes: This Shiraz is made from low cropped fruit of PT23 Shiraz clone from D and A blocks.
2021 was a welcome return to ideal growing conditions here in the Yarra Valley. A prolonged, classical season allowed for brilliant definition of flavour across our range.
